Had a couple of days in Melbourne, but after a very hectic week we were feeling a bit under the weather so we chilled out in the hostel and city, mostly exploring from the comfort of the free city circle tram. We did the city tour and saw some incredible street art and lane ways. Weather here was much colder than we were used to but the sun did shine on the second day! Sadly this meant our time in Australia was over, we can’t believe how quickly the time has gone.
Cordelia here 🙂 Byron bay was hippie and alternative with falafel everywhere! Lots of dreadlocks and buskers and bare feet. We spent half a day surfing here and it turned out to be one of our more challenging experiences! Hardest part was simply getting out past the huge waves before gracefully sliding onto your board, waiting for the wave, paddling hard, chanting ‘hands-knees-front foot-back foot-stand!’ Easy. Until you fall off and crash into another surfer, your board or the sand on the bottom, or instead get washed up onto shore like a beached whale! I was determined and wouldn’t give up, despite only standing for roughly 0.4 seconds in the whole 3 hours. Kels managed to get some casual one on one tuition from the surfer dude who was determined to get her to stand up – which she did…for about 0.8 seconds! All in all a very fun, exhausting afternoon and we were aching and bruised for days afterwards!
The past 3 days we have been on Fraser Island just off the east coast. It was an amazing experience and a definite highlight. Fraser is the largest sand island in the world and the vegetation literally grows out of the sand. There are only a handful of roads and we drove around in 4-wheel drive coaches on the sand tracks and beaches. It was a very bumpy ride as the sand was so soft, and there were definitely some screams from us when the bus tipped and rolled around!
We are busy planning the final few parts of our 3 month trip (Aus, NZ and Thailand) and we are getting very excited now!! We will use this blog to share stories, photos and videos of our adventure (not sure yet how often we will be updating but will try our best!).
First stop is Australia..! We are leaving on September 21st at 8.40am and will land a day later at 21.40 in Brisbane. We’ve got 3 nights here then catching a flight North to Cairns to start our east coast trip! We’ll travel south along the beaches of the east coast for 4 weeks until we reach Sydney (then catching a flight to Melbourne before jetting off to New Zealand)
If anyone has any recommendations then please let us know by commenting on this blog post / through FB etc 🙂
